Dr. Brian J. Smith is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (BSCE ‘01 and PhD ‘13) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (MSCE ‘02). He holds a concurrent position in the School of Architecture as an associate teaching professor where his primary responsibilities are teaching courses related to structural design and structural systems. In addition, Dr. Smith is an associate teaching professor in the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, where he teaches design courses in structural engineering and introductory engineering courses within the First-Year Engineering program. He was the recipient of the 2018 Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching which recognizes faculty members who have a profound influence on undergraduate students through sustained exemplary teaching.
Dr. Smith is a licensed civil engineer whose professional experience focused on the evaluation and investigation of structural failures as well as the development of practical solutions to structural deficiencies in existing buildings. He has worked on a variety of projects, including investigations of structural failures, seismic evaluations of existing buildings, evaluations of post-earthquake and post-hurricane damaged structures, and improvement designs for historic buildings.
At Notre Dame, Dr. Smith’s primary research interests are in the fields of innovative structural systems, earthquake engineering, large-scale experimental testing, and engineering education. He was the recipient of the 2015 Charles C. Zollman award from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Journal recognizing his contribution in advancing the state-of-the-art of precast and prestressed concrete.
