Master of Architecture (M.Arch)—Path C

Graduate student working one on one with a professor.

Eligibility

Applicants for the three-year M.Arch program must have an accredited undergraduate degree in something other than architecture. This includes allied disciplines such as urban studies and landscape architecture as well as more varied subjects such as economics and philosophy.

As a professional degree program, this program satisfies the NAAB’s requirement for licensure in the U.S. This is not a certified STEM program.

Degree Requirements

  • Completion of the three-week summer intensive (before the first semester only)
  • Six semesters of coursework, including one semester of study in Rome, Italy, for a minimum total of 93 credits.
  • Successful completion and presentation of a design thesis and submission of the appropriately formatted thesis book.

Note: Students must move through the studio courses sequentially. Previous academic and professional work does not offer the opportunity for a shorter course of study.

Internship Requirements

Internship hours are not required for graduation. Internships are encouraged as part of the educational experience. A Career Fair is held each spring along with preparatory workshops to assist students seeking both summer and full-time positions.

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for advanced standing in one or more courses in the technical and history sequence. Syllabi are required and sample coursework may be requested. Advanced standing is not available for studio courses, history of Rome, Rome courses, or upper level theory.

Transfer credit is not available at the graduate level in the School of Architecture. Advanced standing, if approved, will lessen the credit minimum for the course of study and lighten the course load in one or more semesters, offering students the opportunity to take fewer courses or to take more electives. Students opting for a lighter course load in a given semester should ensure that their number of credits still meets the minimum requirements for full-time student status, their student loans, etc.

TA Opportunities

Students in the M.Arch program may serve as teaching assistants on a semester by semester basis. TAs serve in a variety of capacities in support of faculty for studio, lecture, and seminar courses. Students’ preferred subject areas are taken into account as assignments are made where possible. In order to serve as a TA in a particular course, the student must have taken the course previously or completed coursework on the topics included at a previous institution.

Research Opportunities

The graduate programs are studio-based and do not require a research agenda or research advisor. Individual research interests may be engaged, though, through a variety of avenues such as independent studies and fellowships.

Financial Support

Students in the M.Arch program receive a partial tuition scholarship for six semesters of study provided they maintain academic good standing.
