Conference Addressed New Urbanism Movement
The University of Notre Dame chapter of "Students for New Urbanism" held a three-day conference titled "Ask Me About My T-Zone: How We Discuss New Urbanism" Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th at Bond Hall, home of the School of Architecture.
The conference allowed students and young practitioners to connect and collaborate with other young people interested in the practice of New Urbanism, to learn the latest new urbanist trends and to contribute ideas and experiences that will help advance the mission to improve the built environment.
The T-zone refers to "The Transect," an idea developed by New Urbanist theorists that classifies the use of land and human settlement through six distinct "transect zones" (T-1 through T-6). Zones T-1 and T-2 refer to rural transect zones and zones T-3 through T-6 refer to traditional towns and neighborhoods. See diagram below.
John Norquist, president and CEO of the Congress for the New Urbanism, delivered the keynote address. He was joined by Emily Talen, a professor of urban and regional planning at the Arizona State University School of Public Affairs.
Saturday’s presenters included Keith Schneider, a former New York Times national correspondent specializing in environment and land-use reporting; John Torti, principal of Torti Gallas and Partners based in Silver Spring, Md., who addressed new urbanism and the environment; Marianne Cusato, a 1997 Notre Dame architecture graduate who has received international acclaim for her work on the Katrina Cottages, for which she received a People’s Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the National Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institute; Geoffrey Mouen, an architect and urban planner based in Celebration, Fla., and Scott Merrill, a noted architect and urban planner whose firm has recently received the Arthur Ross Award from the Institute for Classical Architecture "in recognition of a body of work that has contributed to traditional American design."
