This lecture explores Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen's interest in urban planning emerged directly from his concern with the spatial repercussions of the placement of buildings. Following a successful early architectural partnership with Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren, Saarinen established an independent practice that focused increasingly on large-scale urban planning challenges. This lecture explores his major Finnish urban schemes for Munkkiniemi-Haaga and central Helsinki, examining his collaborative work with Gustaf Strengel, Bertel Jung, and Otto-Iivari Meurman—figures who supported Saarinen while significantly shaping the direction of urban planning in Finland.
