Biography

Markus Tubbesing was born in 1973 in Munich and grew up in Singapore and Tokyo. He studied architecture at ETH Zurich, graduating in 1998. He started his professional career as a project leader at the architectural firm of Hans Kollhoff in Berlin (1998-2003) and Rotterdam (2003-2005). Returning to academia in 2005, he worked as a design assistant and research associate alongside Professor Hans Kollhoff in the “Laboratory of the Architecture of the City” at ETH Zürich. From 2008 to 2011, he was awarded a scholarship at the Swiss National Science Foundation Graduate School for “Art & Science” and obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Bern with his dissertation titled “The Competition for Greater Berlin 1910”. In the same year, he was appointed Senior Scientist at the “Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture” at ETH Zurich, working together with Professor Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, with whom he published the “Atlas of Urban Design” in 2018. Since 2018, Tubbesing has been Professor for Architectural Design and Heritage Conservation at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam and is Vice Dean of the School of Architecture. Concurrently, he operates his own architectural firm together with his wife, Sonja. Alongside, he actively engages with professional organizations and advisory boards, such as the Association of German Architects (AIV), the German Werkbund Berlin, the Heritage Advisory Board of the State of Brandenburg, and the Lübeck World Heritage and Design Advisory Board.
