Lecture from Eusebio Leal Spengler, City Historian of Havana, Cuba
On Monday, March 27, Eusebio Leal Spengler, city historian of Havana, Cuba, will be visiting Notre Dame to deliver a lecture in Bond Hall. In addition to his responsibilities as City Historian, Dr. Leal also serves as deputy to the National Assembly in Cuba, as president of the Commission of Monuments in the City of Havana and as a United Nations goodwill ambassador. He is an important figure in the Cuban government and we are very honored to have him visit campus.
The School of Architecture presented Leal with the 2016 Henry Hope Reed Award, given annually to an individual working outside the practice of architecture who has supported the cultivation of the traditional city, its architecture and art.
During his lecture, Leal will tell the story of how he transformed the Office of the Historian from a conventional cultural agency to a financially autonomous model of management that not only generates the funds needed to undertake complex restoration projects but also provides support for the local community. He will also address broader themes of of regional and local architecture in an age of globalization.
This lecture will be presented in Spanish with simultaneous English interpretation available.
