On Tuesday, May 12, John T. McGreevy, the Charles and Jill Fischer Provost at the University of Notre Dame, announced the winners of the 2026 University faculty awards.
“This year’s faculty award recipients represent the very best of Notre Dame through their outstanding achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service,” McGreevy said. “Their work strengthens our academic community and furthers the University’s mission as a leading global Catholic research institution.”
Associate Teaching Prof. Giuseppe Mazzone was awarded the Thomas P. Madden Award. The citation reads:
The Thomas P. Madden Award honors a faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the teaching of first-year students. Giuseppe Mazzone leads courses where students in the School of Architecture form their earliest habits of seeing, making, and thinking as designers, including Graphics I: Drawings and Design I. He builds high-clarity instructional structures that help first-year students translate abstract principles into disciplined craft. His teaching is grounded in fundamentals while also helping students develop confidence moving between analog and digital tools in a coherent, “traditional approach to digital technologies.” In 2018, he developed a detailed graphic reconstruction of the Parthenon West Frieze specifically as an instructional tool for helping freshman studio students learn how to cast shades and shadows—an example of faculty leadership that turns scholarly skill into actionable pedagogy. Professor Mazzone consistently sets expectations that are demanding but legible, enabling students to build competence through repeatable steps rather than guesswork. His pedagogy reflects a disciplined studio ethos that first-year students can carry forward—training attention, accuracy, and judgment—while keeping the learning process accessible through concrete exercises and visual tools.
