100 Years of Architecture at Notre Dame

photo of 100 years coverThis 110-page publication, edited by architeture librarian Jane Devine Mejia, with contributions from Rev. Edward Malloy, Professors Carroll William Westfall, John Stamper, Norman Crowe, Dennis Doordan, Robert Amico and Thomas Gordon Smith, celebrates the full history of the architecture program at Notre Dame. With 1998-99 marking the centenary of Notre Dame's degree in architecture, the occasion was ideal to create a lasting record of the School's unique history. Filled with lively accounts of students' escapes, the directions the School has taken over the years, information on buildings the program has occupied and the role of the School's leaders, 100 Years of Architecture deepens understanding of the history of Notre Dame architecture. The book is a thoughtful written account and visual record of the School. Images are as important as words, often more so in the study of architecture. With that in mind, 100 Years of Architecture collects not only thematic essays but also a wide variety of images from the University Archives, past Notre Dame publications and the private collections of people connected to the School. Alumni and professors find a reflection of themselves in the pages and others gain an appreciation of the School's place in the history of architectural education.
