John Alexander is an Assistant Professor of Architectural History in the University of Texas at San Antonio's Department of Architecture. His area of specialization is Italian Renaissance and Baroque Architecture, specifically the architectural patronage of Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584), the reforming archbishop of Milan, and the designs of his preferred architect, Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527-1596). Dr. Alexander recently published From Renaissance to Counter-Reformation: The Architectural Patronage of Carlo Borromeo during the Reign of Pius IV ( Rome: Bulzoni, 2007). This book investigates an early, formative period in Borromeo's life and career, addressing issues of patronage, significance of form, Mannerism and the Counter-Reformation in Rome and Milan.
