Study of South Bend’s historic structures now available

The results of a semester-long study intended to provide support in bringing quality development to downtown South Bend’s historic structures, and a plan for the city’s urban core is now available (Download: Historic Study Presentation). Notre Dame architecture students formally presented the project to the City of South Bend on April 4th.

Analyzing and documenting the Central Business District of Downtown South Bend, one group of students looked at historic buildings such as the LaSalle Hotel, All-American Bank Building, the Federal Building and the St. Joseph County Courthouse. The students assessed the buildings on their present condition, adaptation value, and made recommendations on what the buildings could be used for today.

In conjunction, another studio focused on an urban plan for South Bend’s core, addressing infill and doing rough conceptual drawings of proposed new structures for the area.

The presentations support the intentions of the recently completed City Plan, a 20-year growth strategy for South Bend developed by the city’s division of community development.
