Students cited in Green Community Competition

Author: School of Architecture

Three fifth-year students working with the School’s Center for Building Communities (CBC) received a project citation from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) “Green Community” international competition. The competition, which drew 260 entries from 15 different countries, was conducted in collaboration with the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Students were encouraged to rethink their communities in relation to the environment—i.e., where energy originates, and where garbage goes. Laura van Batenburg-Stafford, B.Arch ’09, Nicole Davis, B.Arch ’09 and Cristianne Peschard B.Arch ’09 focused on an under-utilized brownfield site near downtown Los Angeles—the North Industrial Area. They were advised by Professors Sallie Hood and Ronald Sakal. The students' proposal included stacking factories, putting parking underground, redesigning overly wide streets, and establishing a school, recreation center and market hall as pedestrian-accessible nodes of community activity. A book, Designing for the Future: Introducing the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Building Communities, produced by Professors Sallie Hood and Ron Sakal and edited by Harold Henderson, was released in late 2008. The publication was funded by Champion Enterprises, Inc.
