The Rome of The Americas: Havana, Cuba

In the fall of 2011, University photographer Matt Cashore accompanied Visiting Professors Jorge and Luis Trelles on a traveling studio to Havana, Cuba, and captured the experience for Notre Dame Magazine. 

Seaside At 30: Lessons from the First New Urbanist Community and the Future of Traditional Town Building

Highway 61 Visited
In August 2009, School of Architecture Professor Philip Bess took his Graduate Urban Design Studio through the South, following famed U.S. Route 61 (The Blues Highway), and the Natchez Trace, among others, down to New Orleans. The main goals of the traveling studio were to experience different forms of urbanism in motion, to understand how regional forms developed, and to add to the students' overall awareness of how urban design impacts lives.

Architecture Students Contribute to Revitalization of Local Neighborhood:
Thanks to the vision and talent of several School of Architecture Students and members of the Notre Dame architecture group Students for New Urbanism (SNU) working in collaboration with South Bend's Near Northwest Neighborhood Association (NNNA), an emptly lot in South Bend now holds a brand new American Foursquare style home.

In the summer of 2010 a group of School of Architecture students helped design and build a primary school in Uganda. This installment documents the students' initial work.

The Richard H. Driehaus Prize 2010 Awards Ceremony:
This video contains the 2010 Awards Ceremony for the Richard H. Driehaus Prize and the Henry Hope Reed Award won by Spanish architect Rafael Manzano Martos and Professor Vincent Scully, respectively. The Awards Ceremony was held in Chicago in March, 2010 and included speeches by architecture luminaries. 

2010 Richard H. Driehaus Prize Winner Rafael Manzano Martos:This video offers an overview of Rafael Manzano Martos' work and design process. Details about his creative process and craftsmanship are included, along with glimpses of site-specific work in Spain.

2010 Henry Hope Reed Award Winner Vincent J. Scully:
A short encapsulation of the achievements and contributions Vincent Scully has made to our understanding of architecture, especially preservation issues. The piece also includes a brief history of Henry Hope Reed Award, given annually in tandem with the Richard H. Driehaus Prize.

Bath Summer Studio 2009:
Students from the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture participated in a summer studio in Bath, England in 2009. While there, they studied traditional and classical architectural forms and donated a series of plans and renderings to the city of Bath, contributing to the city’s efforts to accommodate urban growth while retaining the city’s assets.

The Hesburgh Alumni Lecture at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut on Thursday, March 4, 2010 was presented by Professor Duncan G. Stroik, AIA.

Duncan Stroik Lecture: "Originality and Tradition"
The Catholic University of America and the University of Notre Dame co-hosted the 2010 symposium Extending and Transforming the Tradition of Catholic Sacred Architecture. This lecture was given on Saturday, May 1, 2010.

John Matteo Lecture:
As part of the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture speaking series, John Matteo, preservationist, gave a talk titled “Lost (and Found) in Translation:  Structural Reinterpretations of the Pantheon” in October 2008. This is an encapsulation of some key ideas he presented.

David Salmela Lecture:
As part of the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture speaking series, David Salmela, FAIA, spoke on the ancient and the modern in September 2008.  This is an encapsulation of some key ideas he presented.

Liane Lefaivre Lecture:
As part of the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture speaking series, Liane Lefaivre, Chair of History and Theory of Architecture, University of Applied Art, Vienna, gave a talk titled “The Child, the City and the Power of Play.”  This is an encapsulation of some key ideas she presented.

Dan and Karen Parolek Lecture:
At the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture, Dan and Karen Parolek, architects, spoke on the dimensions of New Urbanism.  This is an encapsulation of some key ideas they presented.

Susana Torre Lecture:
As part of the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture speaking series, Susana Torre, architect, gave a talk titled “Architecture, Urbanism and the Feminist Project.”  This is an encapsulation of some key ideas she presented.
 
2009 Richard H. Driehaus Prize Colloquium:  A discussion about architecture, tradition and preservation aired on WTTW Chicago featuring Driehaus Prize winner Egyptian-born architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, The New Yorker’s architectural critic Paul Goldberger, Argentinean preservationist and Henry Hope Reed Award winner Fabio Grementieri and American Academy in Rome director, Adele Chatfield-Taylor.

Historic Preservation:  Professor Krupali Uplekar’s course and grant-funded project to restore a local cherished church. 

Notre Dame School of Architecture Carnegie Library Project:  Graduate students from the School of Architecture presented designs for an addition to and renovation of Washington, DC’s Carnegie Library.

Accessibility Awareness day at Notre Dame:  Architecture students learn first hand what it's like to navigate buildings with wheelchairs, crutches, blindness and number of other conditions that call for more empathy in design.
