There are number of government agencies, institutions of higher education and other organizations that recognize the value of learning beyond the classroom. Here is a list of programs that offer funding:

David M. Schwarz Architects Internship & Traveling Fellowship - Two annual awards for Internship and Travel, open to undergraduate and graduate students who are one year away from graduation at the University of Notre Dame School of Architetcure. The fellowship consists of a 10 week paid internship in the office of David M. Schwarz Architects in Washington, D.C. and a $5,000 stipend for travel and independent research during the summer of 2010. Applications are due to Prof. John Stamper on March 1, 2010.
